Development of Swimming Area in Maafaru Island
The Maafaru Island Council is proposing to develop a recreational swimming area north of the current harbour. This is part of the Coucils mission to create safe recreational spaces for the community to improve the overall health and well-being. The main objective of this project is to create a desginated swimming area that is safely accessible to all members of the community especially the eldery.
The Council will be partnering with the Society for Maafaru Development (SMD) a local on-governmental organization (NGO) operating in Maafaru Island to implement the Project.
The shallow lagoon of the island is covered in thick beds of seagrass and various algae which makes it unsuitable especially for the elderly and younger members of the community to use for swimming.
The proposed Swimming Area is located on the western side of the island, north of the current harbour. The Swimming Area measures 500 ft by 200 ft by 350 ft and is proposed to be dredged by 1 ft from the current seabed level.
The swimming area will be dredged using an excavator to maximum of 1 ft from the current seabed level. The aim is to root out all seagrass/seaweed growing within this footprint.
Dredged material will be temporarily stockpiled on the adjacent beach and sieved to separate seagrass/seaweed and sand. Sand will be placed on dump truck and will be used to level the three roads which are currently unusable. Seagrass and Seaweed will be taken to a compost pit to make compost for the farmers in Maafaru Island, as a method to ensure minimal amount of waste.
